Have you ever heard of a fantastic place with a very long and captivating history? What is one of the symbols of Karelia which is very popular among tourists all over the world? Of course it is Kizhi Island that is situated on the Lake Onega, a famous open-air museum, where one can see very old historically significant wooden houses, churches and chapels.
Can you imagine that wooden buildings created with no iron parts are able to survive and resist for about 300 years? But they really are! Nowadays one can see the miracles of Kizhi such as a 22-domed Transfiguration Church also known as “Summer Church”, the treasure of the island’s architecture that was built in 1714! It is about 37 m tall, so the church is one of the tallest log structures in the world!
A fascinating view opens to “Winter Church”, a ten-domed Intercession Church that was also build in the 18th century (1764). Moreover it is almost unbelievable that the Bell tower was build without any nails or other metal and it took place in 1874!
A real miracle is a windmill that was also made without iron part, so you can just stand and look at it and without any doubt you will be amazed by its sight!!!
By the way, there are two small villages with log houses on the island. Local fishermen and museum staff live there all year round, and of course, you may visit these villages and communicate with the locals. They will definitely tell you a lot of interesting facts and stories about their island and show the way they live. The locals are very friendly and hospitable and are eager to share what they know. Or you can just go for a walk across the island, enjoy fresh warm air from the lake, lie on the green grass in summer, tan under the sun, or feel the wild whiteness and silence of the winter Kizhi, so get relaxed among the beauty and the calmness of the Karelian nature, because it is really a very beautiful place!!!
Kizhi Island is not only a complex of wooden architecture; it is a complex of wonders! Visiting this magic place will leave an unforgettable impression on you.
The wonderful Kizhi is of the world value and is considered to be the symbol of the Republic of Karelia, which is included into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
