Russian prepositions

They are short and ordinary, but you use them all the time, almost in every sentence. We are talking about prepositions. They are words or groups of words which are used before a noun, a noun phrase, a pronoun or a numeral to connect them to other words. We present you the list of common Russian prepositions!

в/во + Prepositional casе

It is used to describe the place of something or someone, or the place where an action occurs.

It may answer the question «Где?» (Where) or «Куда?» (Where to). It is also used to describe motion towards something; a noun in the Accusative case designates the purpose of motion.

This preposition can correspond to several English words: in, at, into, to

Example:

Я живу в городе. Дети гуляют в лесу. Мы встретим вас в зоопарке.

(all these sentences answer the question Where so we use the Prepositional case)

Я еду в город. Они пойдут в лес. Мы собираемся в зоопарк.

(all these sentences answer the question Where to so we use the Accusative case)

You can also use the preposition в/во to say when something happened. Then you will use the Prepositional case with month, year or century and the Accusative with hour and days of the week.

Example:

Николай Гоголь жил в девятнадцатом веке. Анна родилась в 1995 году. В мае мы поедем в Москву. Давай встретимся в три часа. В следующий понедельник мы не работаем.

за + Instrumental case

It is used to describe the place of something or someone; you are answering the question «Где?» (Where) or to describe motion towards something; you are answering the question «Куда?» (Where to)

This preposition corresponds to English words: behind, beyond

Example:

Остановка сразу за поворотом.

(this sentence answers the question «Где?» Where so we use the Instrumental case)

Завтра они собираются за город.

(this sentence answers the question «Куда?» Where to so we use the Accusative case)

из + Genetive case

This preposition corresponds to the English word: from

Example:

Я из Англии. Тебе пришло письмо из России.  

к + Dative case

This preposition corresponds to the English word: towards

Example:

Я зайду к ним после концерта.

на + Prepositional case

This preposition corresponds to English words: onto, on, to

Example:

На улице дождь.

(this sentence answers the question «Где?» Where,so we use the Prepositional case)

Дети выбежали на улицу (this sentence answers the question «Куда?»,so we use the Accusative case)

You can also use this preposition with the word «неделя» (week) to say when something happened.

Еxample:

На прошлой неделе было холодно. На этой неделе у меня не будет времени с Вами встретиться. На следующей неделе мы едем в Италию.

о/об + Prepositional case

This preposition corresponds to the English word: about

Еxample:

Я не хочу говорить об этом. О чём этот фильм?

от + Genetive case

This preposition corresponds to the English word: from

Еxample:

Тебе прислали цветы от Павла.

по + Dative case

This preposition corresponds to the English words: along, according to

Еxample:

Вам лучше идти по этой стороне улицы. По их совету, мы не стали переходить дорогу.

с + Instrumental case

This preposition corresponds to the English word: with

Еxample:

Мы с тобой пойдем туда вместе. Хотим поздравить вас с праздником.

It can also be used to say since when something has been happening. In this case use the Genetive.

Example:

Она не работает с марта. Я собираюсь в отпуск со вторника.

у + Genetive case

This preposition corresponds to the English words: by, at, near

Еxample:

У тебя есть телефон? У какого памятника встретимся?

без + Genetive case

This preposition corresponds to the English word: without

Еxample:

Я пью кофе без молока. Нельзя прожить без воздуха.
