5 Russian habits that might seem weird to foreigners

1.     Preparing lots of food than is necessary for when friends come over

Russians believe that it’s better too much than too little. By cooking lots of food or dishes they show how hospitable they are.

2.     Sitting down for a minute before a journey
Once the suitcase is packed, most Russians will pause and sit quietly for a minute before leaving. Though there are people who consider this custom hangs over from the old days, lots of Russians still believe that it’s a way to collect your thoughts, calm down and have a little rest.
3.     Congratulating one another on getting out of a sauna (banya)
It’s customary to say “S lyogkim parom!” (“Bet you've had a good steaming!”) as if hoping he/she had a pleasant experience, to which the person emerging replies “Spasibo” (“thank you”).
4.     Dressing up to go to the store

Even it’s just a walk to the nearest grocery store, Russian people feel like looking attractive. Some women would do a make-up too.

5.     Not smiling at strangers.

Russians consider smiles to be genuine, to be shared with friends and relatives only.
