Karelia from another angle: extreme events gather sportsmen from the largest Russian cities

What is Stormy Waters Championship? It is a freestyle race that takes place on the most powerful Karelian rivers – Shuya, Suna  and  Vodla. Each sportsman is free to choose kayak or canoe to perform a number of elements in extremely turbulent water for 45-60 seconds.  Each element is given a certain number of points discussed by the judges.  Spectacular water storm of bright lifejackets and huge waves!

Karelia is a perfect spot for extreme water sports. Why?

The crack of a matter is in the great importance of Karelian rivers. They play a significant role for the  Russian energetic system. There are 16 hydroelectric power stations in Karelia. 3 chains of power plants produce more than 3 701.6 million kilowatt-hour! To find a perfect “playspot” the organizers of a Championship had been assessing the “highest and fastest wave” and the one was found in Karelian village Tivdya. The water conditions here allow sportsmen to complete a great number of elements and as a result the Championship has been taking place here since 2009.
