WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU TO RUSSIA

If you happen to travel to Petrozavodsk (and want to start learning Russian with Enjoy Russian language school) then you should know what to expect from the weather. The most significant thing is that the weather in Karelia is as unpredictable as in Iceland.

In winter it's very snowy and the temperature might be up to 25 below zero. So you should definitely take with you earmuffs or beanie, scarf, waterproof winter jacket and boots. It's also quite slippery everywhere you go even though we put sand all around the road.

If you are about to take a summer trip, then pack some faves you wear in chilly weather as well - jeans, cardigans, sweater or even a scarf. But be ready to face unbelievable heat (especially if you take a course in July), so don't forget a swimsuit, shorts, sunscreen, sunglasses etc.

There, I met a Russian girl who was staying in a Belgian host family. The first Russian word she learned me was a swear word! She told me that if someone ever treated me badly, I had to call them ‘durak’. Even though we had a hard time communicating, we did have a lot of fun together. She was my first introduction to the Russian language".

Russian cartoons

Aksakov Sergey Timofeyevitch – well known Russian writer of the 19^th century.

He is the author of a famous tale «Red flower» («Аленький цветочек», the plot of the tale is almost the same you see in Walt Disney «Beauty and the Beast» ). When Sergey was a child he heard this story from one of the country people. So the tale is the excellent example of a folk art.  Being an adult he write it by memory. It was published for the first time in 1858.

Here you can watch favorite Russian cartoon «Аленький цветочек» (1952, Союзмультфильм). You’ll see merchant family in Ancient Russia (before 17^th and 18^th centuries).

Awesom fishermen!

What do you think is the most unusual thing in Petrozavodsk that could remind about USA?

There is a wonderful Onega embankment in Petrozavodsk! This place could be called cultural center of the city. It is famous for many monuments and sculptures donated by sister cities and located along the embankment.

The first one which initiated the whole gallery of sculptures was “Fishermen”. It was a present from the twin city “Duluth” (Minnesota, USA). It was installed in 1991. Author - sculptor Rafael Consuegra. There are Russian and American fishermen throwing a fishing net. According to the author this net symbolizes the joint creative work.

Russians are insanely rude and crazy

99% of Russians live their daily life without being rude to each other. It only takes some openness, readiness to throw away some intercultural cliches and a strong will to understand. Besides, Russians are hospitable, outgoing and always ready to help.
Okay, Russians are very, very expressive. They may wave and shake their hands like they are having a seizure when they’re just talking about the weather. What’s more, they are pretty loud! And of course it doesn't mean that they are crazy!

One evening walking around the city our students got to know people from a wedding party just out of the place where was taking place the wedding party. Theywent on talking with them for about half an hour, until they decided to invite our students to a club calling the taxi for us, and we spent the whole night dancing with them.

Have you ever seen such Karelian pies? We haven't!

"The recipe I got from Petrozavodsk went into retry in Estonia. Kalitkies (Karelian pies) with potatoes, carrots and apple-redcurrant jam- Приятного аппетита!" - wrote Kadri

One of our students (Kadri from Estonia) has not only learnt Russian in Petrozavodsk but has known a recipe for Kalitkas (traditional Karelian pies). And what do we see? She cooks them at home and even modifies our pies! Isn't it great!?
