Have you heard that there are about 4500 cultural heritage sights on the territory of Karelia?

Enjoy Russian student from Luxembourg Eleanor came to Karelia about 3 weeks ago. She successfully combines learning Russian in Petrozavodsk and discovering new places all over Karelia (the Republic in the Russian North-West). A few days ago Eleanor and a group of students came to the most outstanding sight - Kizhi museum which is located in 50-min water-ride from Petrozavodsk.

“I’m eternally grateful to the school for organizing the whole thing for me, which meant that I got a tour of the island with a group of Russians, led by the very lovely Evgeniya.” What are the secrets of traditional nineteenth-century constructions? How do the craftspeople live on the island full time? Let us give the floor to Eleanor.

A trip to Russia is always a good idea!

Enjoy Russian Students from Italy and Great Britain, a trip to Kizhi

We do love when students share the experience about Enjoy Russian school cultural program. This summer more than 70 students have visited famous Kizhi island, an open-air museum which is located in Karelia.

Its landscape makes you feel at your granny’s cozy country house where you can walk on the grass, stroke a horse and get on the swing. The Museum has been researching, preserving and popularizing culture of the native peoples of Karelia for more than 40 years. The gem of this collection is the 22 domed Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior.

Almost every testimonial touches upon Kizhi excursion.

"Yesterday we went to Kizhi Island, one of the most interesting place near Petrozavodsk city. ☀️ beautiful nature and amazing people!" says Isabella Martina from Italy.

"The cultural program was also beautiful. We went to Kizhi Island, with whom I feel in love at first sight, and we learnt how to cook typical Karelian kalitki", says Clara.

Can you imagine how beautiful the island could be in winter? Come to Russia to find out!

Volunteers from Great Britain, Italy and Denmark teach children not only English

Why do we invite Enjoy Russian students to volunteer in the language camps? Because this is a two-way collaboration: guys learn the language (Russian) and teach the language (English) which turns out to be very efficient. This is the opportunity to come to a better understanding of how to speak a foreign language.

We usually ask the participants of the International Camp "What did the volunteer teach you?"
That's what they say:

- I learned so much about London and the way of life in England! And I also learned a lot of useful phrases
- The volunteer taught me to write in Chinese.
- Julia always cheered us, she is so funny!
- The volunteer helped me to learn about the countries, told about the Leaning Tower of Pisa
- The volunteer taught me how to work in a group, and also told me that Hollywood is in Los Angeles!
-  These two weeks were undoubtedly the most stunning and exciting in my whole life!

Volunteers from all over the world come to Petrozavodsk to teach kids and teenagers

Meet our new volunteer from Great Britain. Her name is Catherine and she arrived to Petrozavodsk (the capital of Karelia. Enjoy Russian School is situated here) 2 weeks ago and already improved her Russian with our teachers. Now it is time for her to teach kids!

International Summer Camp in Karelia is a great opportunity for foreign students to practice Russian and get involved into some cool activities. Some show the games, create performances, others arrange dance battles and sport competitions for the enthusiastic kids.

Nowadays Frederik from Denmark and Giulia from Italy volunteer at the Camp as well.

See more about the program and feel free to ask questions!

How to get warm in Russia

An incredibly useful life hack from Enjoy Russian stuedents!

Living in Russia is always the unique experience. Since 2004 we have been meeting people from warm countries like Greece, Italy or Spain, Singapore, Australia and Indonesia. Not all of them come to learn Russian language in summer and sometimes they come during the  Northern winter on purpose to experience something absolutely new.  But how to stay warm no matter what? Drink vodka or wrap yourself in an icelandic wool blanket? Here is the trick from Enjoy Russian student Jadah – before going to Russian classes warm your boots up with the hairdryer! Here is the whole story in Russian from our host mom Liydmila Sokolova. Specially for those who want to practice:)

RUSSIAN GRAVITY FALLS

Vottovaara mountain in Karelia

On September 3 Enjoy Russian language school starts a group course for people who wants to start speaking Russian in a short time (you may enroll here). We usually offer diverse cultural program to our students but sometimes they choose the places to visit in Karelia by themselves and this autumn we highly recommend you checking out some mystic places in Russian North. Why? Because here in Karelia we have it all: mountain idols, ancient petroglyphs, stone labyrinths and one more place – Vottovaara mountain. It can be compared to Gravity Falls  from the famous Disney series and here’s why.

A healthy habit to explore: what is Vottovaara mountain famous for?

They say one may find mystic spots almost in every Russian region. Near Chelyabinsk, lake Baikal,  Chukotka or even in Moscow (famous Patricarch’s  Ponds described by M. Bulgakov in his novel). The Republic of Karelia is not an exсeption.
People say Russian North is a place of energy and inner strength and that a trip around all the “unordinary” spots in Karelia may take 1 month. Vottovaara mountain (470 m) is a place that the locals are always asked about. The mountain was discovered about 30 years ago and still catches everyone’s attention. It is situated in the Central Karelia not  far from Segozero lake. Some ppeople are ready to take travelers there while others strictly say NO. Let us clarify what’s wrong with this place and why everyone should see this.
  1. You may fall asleep in a second. That happened many times with travelers. May be because of ancient Saami people’s rituals or because of the placebo effect. Anyways, you should come to try.
  2. Stones are everywhere. Almost 1500 stones that are called “seidy”. They look like absolutely typical stoenes but there is one tiny moment here. They are extremely heavy but when you get closer to one of them you notice that it stands on several stones that are extremely small in comparison with this big one. How did they get under? No one knows.
  3. Spectacular view of the whole Karelia and even Finland. Even though it is not that high, you may see beautiful lakes and forests of Karelia and even a part of neighbouring country.
  4. Go here if you are a UFO hunter. The locals say you may see here aliens from time to time.
  5. The most tranquil place in Karelia and maybe in the Russian North. Not a single bird, fly or ant. Just you and the energy of mysterious Karelia.

DIDN’T EXPECT TO FALL IN LOVE WITH A RUSSIAN GIRL

A student from Germany came to Petrozavodsk to learn Russian and found the love of a lifetime

Many things happened at Enjoy Russian school since 2003. All the students come here with the main aim – to start speaking Russian and try to live like a Russian for a while. But sometimes incredible things may take place and students find not only good Russian friends or meet a perfect host family. They find love of a lifetime. That is what happened with Andreas from Germany in 2014. Here is a story of his wife, amazing Irina who moved from Russian city of Petrozavodsk (where Enjoy Russian school is situated) to Germany.

Russian love story: he chose Petrozavodsk out of almost 1000 Russian cities

“Hello, everyone and happy 15 birthday, dear “Enjoy Russian”! You have a very special place in my heart and here is the reason why… 🙂
At Uni I’ve studied international relations and in september 2014 we had practice weeks during which i’ve worked at a language school called… “Enjoy Russian”:) One day our lovely boss asked if somebody could dedicate couple of hours and do a small city tour for russian language students. Introverted part of me hesitated for a second, but rational one was saying: “It can be fun, why not?!”. And indeed it was:)
Shall I say that among those students was a lovely man who stole my heart?) At such moments you can’t help but believe in fate… Exactly that autumn he decided to go to Russia, he chose Petrozavodsk out of almost 1000 Russian cities, he chose the school where i’ve happen to have my internship… right time, right place, what a chance?:)
Since then my life has drastically changed: I graduated from University, married my best friend, moved countries to be with him and now we are growing our little precious baby!”
We are always extremely happy to know something about our students life, especially when they share that nice memories and such a great news! Wish you guys all the best and hope that your daughter will come to learn Russian in Petrozavodsk one day too!

11 THINGS IN A BEDROOM IN RUSSIAN

\

Things in a bedroom – here are the most important words everyone must know

It’s always better to remember words
  • with pictures
  • structurised by topics

In this post, you can combine both techniques to learn room vocabulary in Russian!

  1. КРОВАТЬ (kravat’) – a bed
  2. ШКАФ (shkaf) – a wardrobe
  3. СТОЛ (stol) – a table
  4. СТУЛ (stul) – a chair
  5. ЛАМПА (lampa) – a lamp
  6. ТУМБОЧКА (tumbochka) – a bed-side table
  7. КАРТИНА (kartina) – a painting
  8. ЧАСЫ (chasi) – a watch
  9. КОВЁР (kavyor) – a carpet
  10. ШТОРА (shtora) – a curtain
  11. ПОДУШКА (padushka) – a pillow

Here are a few important things about these words

  • Кровать is a feminine noun, so you say моЯ кровать, and not моЙ кровать.
  • The word шкаф can mean a wardrobe, a cupboard, a closet, a bookcase.
  • Be careful with стул and стол – they are so similar. Russian стул sounds pretty like English stool.
  • Часы is a plural word, watch is always plural in Russian.
  • Finally, штора really rarely comes alone, usually there are always two curtains – шторы.

Russian superstitions: DON’T SIT AT A TABLE CORNER OR YOU’LL NEVER GET MaRRIED!

Russians have so many superstitions!Which one is more bizarre? You tell us!

In this post you’ll find out about an interesting superstition, which mostly concerns young people, who are not married.
In Russian culture, corners have always played an important role. Traditional Orthodox Russian homes had a special icon corner, called the “red corner”, because the word “red” (КРАСНЫЙ) also means beautiful in Russian.  The Red Corner was a home altar, where the family stood in prayer each  morning and each evening.  The icon area was draped with a cloth with embroidered ornaments.  A candle glowed. Upon entering the house, visitors first acknowledged the icons as representatives of God’s presence in the family.  They gave a respectful bow, making the sign of the cross, and sometimes offering a short blessing or prayer, before going on to greet the members of the household. Nowadays, there are still “red corners” with icons in some houses, though it’s not as widespread as it was before.
Slavic people believed in mystical properties of corners, for example, they claimed that a place inside of a corner absorbs any energy. That’s why a usual punishment for a naughty child was to stand in a corner – the child calms down more quickly there.
Outstanding corners create, the so-called “energy vortex”, which can “blow away” the energy of a person. That’s why unmarried people should avoid sitting at the corner of a table otherwise they will never get married, according to Russian superstition. Others believe that this will only hold true for seven years, making it possible for younger children to sit at the table corner.
Some modern girls ignore this superstition, and say that if you sit at a corner, your husband will be “with a corner” (МУЖ БУДЕТ С УГЛОМ), which means that the husband will have his own place (house or apartment).

But we all know that any superstition has a reasonable explanation

They say that this superstition comes from the time, when there was a division into honorable and not so honorable guests at a table. The most not important guests, like old maidens, used to sit at the corners (in places where it is not so convenient to sit). Old maidens didn’t have so many chances to get marriend unfortunately. That’s where this believe took its origin from.
But no matter what, if you are young, single, and like to sit at corners, don’t be surprised if you hear from Russians “НЕЛЬЗЯ СИДЕТЬ НА УГЛУ!”. It means you should urgently move to some other place save, where no bad energy is flowing around;)

SURVIVAL RUSSIAN FOR TROUBLESOME SITUATIONS

Of course we are sure that your stay in Russia will be pleasant and fun, but…

if you ever get in trouble (hope not) here are some phrases that might come in handy:
ПОМОГИТЕ, ПОЖАЛУЙСТА! [POMOGITIE, POZHALUISTA] – Help, please!
Я ЗАБЛУДИЛСЯ [YA ZABLUDILSYA] I got lost
У МЕНЯ УКРАЛИ КОШЕЛЁК / ДЕНЬГИ / СУМКУ [U MENYA UKRALI KOSHELYOK / DENGI / SUMKU] My wallet / money / bag was stollen

Я НЕ ПОНИМАЮ ПО-РУССКИ [YA NIE PONIMAYU PO-RUSSKI] – I don’t understand Russian

And of course something you really need to know is how to say “I can’t eat anymore”!

If you ever visit a Russian family make sure you know how to refuse from food, because otherwise you’ll be fed until you can’t move:)

ТОЛЬКО ЧУТЬ-ЧУТЬ [TOLKO CHUT-CHUT] – Just a little bit
ТОЛЬКО ОДНУ РЮМКУ [TOLKO ODNU RYUMKU] – Just one shot

LEARN RUSSIAN AND CONQUER THE KARELIAN WATERS!

Russian Stormy Waters Cup and the rafting tour in Karelia

It goes without saying that nowadays 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is the only talk of the town. But of course the Cup is justa drop in the sea of plenty sport events to take place in Russia this year. Have you heard about the Russian «Stormy Waters» Championship?  Extremely eventful and colorful event is going to take place from 18 till 20 of May in Karelia. Students coming to learn Russian language in Petrozavodsk this spring are really lucky!

Karelia from another angle: extreme events gather sportsmen from the largest Russian cities

What is Stormy Waters Championship? It is a freestyle race that takes place on the most powerful Karelian rivers – Shuya, Suna  and  Vodla. Each sportsman is free to choose kayak or canoe to perform a number of elements in extremely turbulent water for 45-60 seconds.  Each element is given a certain number of points discussed by the judges.  Spectacular water storm of bright lifejackets and huge waves!

Karelia is a perfect spot for extreme water sports. Why?

The crack of a matter is in the great importance of Karelian rivers. They play a significant role for the  Russian energetic system. There are 16 hydroelectric power stations in Karelia. 3 chains of power plants produce more than 3 701.6 million kilowatt-hour! To find a perfect “playspot” the organizers of a Championship had been assessing the “highest and fastest wave” and the one was found in Karelian village Tivdya. The water conditions here allow sportsmen to complete a great number of elements and as a result the Championship has been taking place here since 2009.

Learn Russian and conquer the Karelian waters!

Probably this Stormy Waters Championship is of high interest for professional sportsmen. But what about other people ready to become a real scout for a while and try something a bit crazy? Come to Petrozavodsk to learn Russian language and to take a rafting trip in the land of the fastest rivers and picturesque lakes!
You take Russian language course with professional teachers from 30 of April to May 9 and then you enjoy an incredible 3-day rafting trip, feel the energy of Karelian rivers and lake Onego, taste Russian traditional food made on a bonfire, arrange picnics in the forest, get thrilled by the White nights and meet local nomads and travelers from other countries!

HARD TO SUCCEED EVEN FOR ROBIN HOOD!

Discover your Russian summer and visit the high ropes course in Karelia

Does a name “Sherwood” ring a bell? It does! But we usually think first about the famous park in England, royal forest and Robin Hood. But how is that possible that almost every citizen of Karelia and its surroundings travels there more than once a year? Somewhere in between two major cities of Karelia the adventure park “Sherwood” is located. Known informally as a Seventh heaven the high ropes course makes Karelia attractive to tourists, extreme seekers, wild nature lovers and of course Russian lamguage learners!

Come here not to stare but to act!

Literally the place for jumping, stepping, climbing through and swaying all over! More than hundred m of ropes are installed to hold the platforms and connect the trees. Here you may find everything to challenge yourself from massive barrels and wooden bridges to huge triangle platforms and cubes. You can create your own strategy to pass the trail within a certain period of time or just set a goal of “being able to move” and explore the platforms one by one at your own pace. Once you are tired jump right into the transparent net serving as a life-saving blanket. That is 100% right place if you want to experience the ground crumbles under your feet! Take a look down and you will feel like a bird. It reminds the giant hammock at a height of 30-40 m. There is a big climbing wall by the entrance to Sherwood so you can combine favorite sports and as Russians say «убить двух зайцев одним выстрелом» – kill two birds with one stone. By the way never ever animals suffered here because the park is strictly protected by the local administration.

Spectacular location

The location is gorgeous. 2 hundred year old pines, the choir of unique birds you may find only in Karelia turn the place into a fairytale land and the magnificent lake view. Make sure you get down to the shore of lake Syamozero which is literally the best place to take a walk and have a picnic. Pitch up a tent, make tasty shashlyk with your Russian friends and go to pick blueberry, cranberry and mushrooms. Amazing landscapes bring many gifts in summer. Ask the locals and they will show you where the spring may be found. The purest water you’ve ever tried! You may also visit the similarly-named village with the ancient Karelian traditional houses (Изба) and take a boat trip or enjoy fishing at sunset.  If you want to chill even more after the ropes course take a bike and visit authentic church in a village Akhpoilla. It’s really unique construction because it was built by the Karelian people in 16 century with the observing Golden Section proportions.
You may either buy a ticket to St. Petersburg, take a train to Petrozavodsk and travel to local Sherwood by bus or can simply sign up for a course of Enjoy Russian school. Every summer our students enjoy not only Russian language learning but also exploring the surroundings of Petrozavodsk!

FALL IN LOVE WITH RUSSIA IN SUMMER

Feel, enjoy and discover the wilds!

Even though winter holidays season is right around the corner it is never wrong time to recall good summer days. They say “While it is fine weather mend your sails!”  For Enjoy Russian school situated in one of the most beautiful Russian regions this season means meeting  many people from across the Globe, seeing happy faces between the Russian language classes and taking bright pictures of students and volunteers every single second.  But what is it like, summer beyond the school?

Why to choose Karelia for summer language vacation?

Here you discover the wilds. Our republic’s geographical position is more than favorable. Unique landscape and rich natural resources attract not only the foreigners but Russians from other regions as well. Karelia is known as a land of lakes and rivers. Just imagine – we have more than 60 000 lakes and about 27000 rivers! And water is the main place for legends to come out. There is even Karelian Loch Ness monster living in Ladoga lake (probably brother or sister to Scottish one). “Long neck and massive silver body”. The description from locals attracts not only tourists but also groups of scientists ready to come here and study the lake in depth. 5% of total area is covered by protected national parks. The largest in Europe lowland waterfall Kivach is the nearest to Petrozavodsk (capital city of Karelia). Famous White Night phenomenon is also worth taking into concideration. Have you heard that it never gets dark in Karelia during summer? You may walk outside and stay up all night without even noticing it’s time to sleep!
Here you feel safe and tranquil. It is never boring, annoying or stressful to spend summer here. Forests are nearby, you can relax, go picking berries and mushrooms, spend cozy evenings by the lake with Russian volunteers. Karelian summer is perfect for everyone because each day is different. It could be sunny, windy or rainy, but the main rule remains: no need to hurry!
Here you enjoy special summer cultural activities. Boat trips and hiking, horse riding and fishing, summer open-air festivals and street performances are held annually to make Karelian people and foreign guests love summertime. A trip to the famous Kizhi island is something you should definitely try. As well as joining to Russian summer holidays celebration like Russia’s day or Family day. By the way students usually live with the host family who always invite them to Russian summer house Datcha of suggest them another option.
Summer with Enjoy Russian school is something you should definitely try! Make sure you signed up for Summer immersion in 2018!

FALSE SYMBOLS OF RUSSIA

What are false symbols of Russia?

There are some things that are considered to be Russian symbols and are really popular among foreigners that visit Russia. They buy these things as souvenirs and bring them home to always keep Russia in their houses and hearts.
The only problem is that these things are usually never used by Russian people nowadays. Most of them don’t have them in their houses and have never had before.

The first vivid example is Matryoshka

It is also known as a Russian nesting doll.  It is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. The first Russian nested doll set was carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin and designed by Sergey Malyutin who was a folk crafts painter. There is a museum of matryoshka in Moscow. There are lots of amazing beautiful dolls there. Matryoshkas could be a real treat for kids, but unfortunately most Russian people don’t buy them for their children, maybe because usually you can’t find a matryoshka in kids stores in Russia – only in souvenir shops, where they cost a fortune.
A samovar (literally “self-boiler”) is a heated metal container traditionally used to heat and boil water in and around Russia as well as in other countries: Central Europe, South-Eastern Europe, Eastern Europe, Iran, Kashmir and the Middle-East. Since the heated water is typically used to make tea, many samovars have a ring-shaped attachment (Russian: конфорка) around the chimney to hold and heat a teapot filled with tea concentrate.
Though traditionally heated with coal or charcoal, many newer samovars use electricity to heat water in a manner similar to an electric water boiler. Antique samovars are often prized for their beautiful workmanship.
Nowadays there are not so many people that have samovars at home. Usually if they do, those samovars were left after their grandparents and are never used anymore. Now people use electric kettles to boil water for tea, though samovar would make this process much more interesting and traditional.
Most people in the world imagine bears and vodka when they think of Russia, right? Vodka is true, but bears… Of course there are bears in woods in Karelia or Siberia. But bears do not walk around centers of Russian cities, and we don’t keep them at home as out pets: it’s too dangerous!:)
Though some symbols of Russia are already too old and outdated, they all are nice and interesting. But if you want to know more about real Russia, come to us this winter or any other time, learn Russian and have fun! Apply for a Russian language course

SOVIET CARTOONS – LEARN RUSSIAN AND HAVE FUN!

Idiom quotes from the old Soviet cartoons

Every Russian person knows such cartoons as “Three from Prostokvashino” or “Nu, pogodi”. People watched them so many times and liked them so much that some quotes from these cartoons became idioms that people often use in modern Russian language. Let’s see a few examples:
1. Мужчина в самом расцвете сил! – A man in the prime of his life!
Cartoon “Malish and Karlson” (Малыш и Карлсон) is based on the story “Karlsson on the roof” by Astrid Lindgrens. Russian people love Karlson! He is an example of how people should enjoy their life. The phrase “Мужчина в самом расцвете сил!” can only be used to describe a man (a guy), who is in his perfect age, he is full of energy and very handsome.
2. Свободу попугаям! – Freedom for parrots!
3. А я ещё крестиком вышивать умею – And I even know, how to embroider stitches
When somebody praises you by saying that you can do so many different things, the best way to make a joke out of it is to say “А я ещё крестиком вышивать умею”.
4. Кто ходит в гости по утрам, тот поступает мудро! – The one that makes a visit to people’s places in the morning does the wise thing.
It’s actually a part of the song of the famous Russian Winnie the Pooh. He is singing it in the morning when going to visit the Rabbit with the Piglet. If you are visiting somebody in the morning, a fun thing to say is  “Кто ходит в гости по утрам, тот поступает мудро!”

GUESS WHO LOVES CATS THE MOST IN THE WORLD

Dalia Research made a survey to find out how many people from different countries have cats at home

They asked more than 43,000 people worldwide whether they had felines. Russians were the most enthusiastic cat fans, the only nation where more than half of respondents had cats, 59% of people surveyed said they keep a feline friend at home.
According to Gfk, recently the number of pets in the world has increased. At the same time, people in most countries prefer to keep dogs (33%) and only 23% prefer cats. For example, in the USA, 49% of residents keep dogs, 35% – cats. In Russia, the situation is quite opposite.

Why do Russians love cats so much?

Scientists believe, it is due to the peculiarities of culture. The hairy cat is a symbol of Veles, the patron of animals of the ancient Slavs, and the link to the other world, which is able to recognize evil spirits. In Russian tradition, cats are endowed with wisdom, and dogs – only with negative features. In modern Russian language you can call a person who did something bad – a dog (СОБАКА), but people in love call each other a kitten, a little cat: КОТЁНОК, КОТИК.
Probably Russia is the only country that has a theatre of cats, called the Kuklachev Cat Theatre. At this unusual theatre, acrobatic cats do all kinds of stunts for the audience’s delight! Director Yury Kuklachev says, “We do not use the word train here because it implies forcing an animal to do something, and you cannot force cats to do anything they don’t want to. We play with the cats.”

Cats in Hermitage

Cats have been working for The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg since the 18th century. The drafty hallways of the palace of the time were being overrun by rats and mice. As a solution, Empress Elizabeth ordered to import a carriage with cats, in 1747… and they have been on the duty to keep the Hermitage rodent free ever since. Currently, there are over seventy cats residing in the Hermitage, with their own headquarters in the basement, where they are fed and taken care of. Sometimes there are even tours organized for everyone who wants to see the life of the Hermitage cats.
In Karelia we also have a famous museum cat, whose name is Kesha. He lives on the Kizhi island, and works as a warden of the museum and symbol of the island. According to diply.com, Kesha is one of the 25 most beautiful cats  in the world. Kesha is a favorite of Kizhi tourists – often when he appears guides lose control of the group – all attention goes to the cat.

TOP 5 RUSSIAN TONGUE TWISTERS TO SPEAK RUSSIAN WITHOUT ACCENT

Tongue twisters aren’t just silly poems that use very similar sounds

They’re a great way to improve your pronunciation and get your mouth moving in Russian! Tongue twisters are originally created for little kids to learn pronouncing difficult sounds, but they can serve a very real use for people studying Russian as a second language. For example, the tongue twister about Sasha could be especially useful to Russian language learners, because it contrasts the similar “s” and “sh” sounds in Russian:
ШЛА САША ПО ШОССЕ И СОСАЛА СУШКУ
The tongue twister about Mila is a great way to practice Russian hard and soft consonants and compare Ы and И; it puts different sounding vowels between similar-sounding consonants.
МАМА МЫЛА МИЛУ МЫЛОМ, МИЛА МЫЛО НЕ ЛЮБИЛ

The tongue twisters above are well-known in Russia and almost every Russian knows it, but not everyone can say them quickly. Russian native speakers also have difficulties with some Russian words. Here is a fragment of old Soviet movie “Карнавал” with famous actress Ирина Муравьёва, where she is trying to improve her pronunciation (she wants to be an actress) by reciting tongue twisters КУКУШКА КУКУШОНКУ КУПИЛА КАПЮШОН, НАДЕЛ КУКУШОНОК КАПЮШОН, КАК В КАПЮШОНЕ ОН СМЕШОН and ОТ ТОПОТА КОПЫТ ПЫЛЬ ПО ПОЛЮ ЛЕТИТ, ПЫЛЬ ПО ПОЛЮ ЛЕТИТ ОТ ТОПОТА КОПЫТ
Don’t bother to try to understand the meaning of the tongue twisters. Usually they are just silly poems with no special meaning, and their purpose is let you practice some difficult Russian sounds, so focus on the right pronunciation, but not on the meaning.

ORTHODOX CHRISTMAS: LET’S CLARIFY THE DATES AND LOOK THROUGH RUSSIAN TRADITIONS

When and how do people celebrate Christmas in Russia?

Sometimes “Enjoy Russian” school students who come to learn Russian in Petrozavodsk during winter time (December and January in particular) associate Christmas in Russia with the 25th of December. Catholic world does celebrate Christmas on this day, but not the Orthodox communities. At least, not all of them. To understand the reason dates differ from country to country one should get an insight into the history.

Why Christmas date is different around the world

The reason for this 13-days-difference is hidden in the calendars people use. Starting with the year 1582 many countries around the globe switched to Gregorian calendar from the Julian one (introduced by Julius Caesar in ..) According to some statistics the process took almost 300 years. And when it finally came to Russia the  Orthodox Chirch did not approve shifting to this new-made year calculating system and remained stick to the Julian calendar.
As a result, in modern world we have Catholic communities using Gregorian calendar, some Orthodox communities living with renewed Julian calendar (which nowadays coincides with Gregorian one and Christmas in these countries is celebrated on 24-25th December) and countries living with Julian calendar like Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Montenegro, Belarus, Egypt that celebrate Christmas on 6-7th of January.

What do Russians do on Christmas day

At all times people in Russia were preparing themselves to Christmas day very carefully. From November 28 till January 6 the religious are fasting and mentally purifying themselves. On this holiday people cook traditional Christmas food, but do not start dinner ceremony before participating in a night church service (usually starts at midnight). Making a wish on this night is also a common tradition.
On the next day the front doors of all houses were open to everybody: people congratulate each other with the great day and invite even strangers to drop by.
And after that the 12-day holiday season starts. Through to the Epiphany Day (January 19) people go sledding, join open-air celebrations, play musical instruments at the streets. An integral part of Russian Christmas celebration is called «колядки». People dress up in a fancy way, come to random houses and sing short humorous songs. The men of the house usually give some sweets to unexpected guests.
Even though Russians do not celebrate Christmas in a grand-scale manner as they do on New Year’s Eve, they find it very enjoyable and delightful.
