PROMINENT FIGURES IN RUSSIAN HISTORY…

… and the history of Petrozavodsk

What are the most recognizable names in Russian history? Here in Petrozavodsk where students from all over the world learn Russian language, we have a monument to Peter the Great. Even those who are not familiar with the historical background of Karelia may guess that the name Petrozavodsk is connected with famous Russian tsar. Firstly it was the settlement of Petrovskaya Sloboda which turned into the largest city in Karelia. Many Enjoy Russian school students try to reveal as much information as they can about the city and devote their final projects in the Russian language to Peter the Great.

Christophe from Germany about Peter the Great

“Russia is in no way inclined to produce personalities of lower interest to an international society than any other nation. In both the troubled and the safe times of Russian history, there have been some remarkable characters that either influenced internal of international politics to such a degree, that our contemporary world couldn’t be imagined without them. One who strikes me personally as exceptionally fascinating would be Peter the Great (Пётр I Алексе́евич).
I’d argue that few Russians have achieved a lasting impression on Russian society to such an extent as Pjotr I has. Little was the former Moscovite Empire known to Western kingdoms before his appearance, little was it developed and little was it willing to change its perspective.
Before his rulership, Pjotr traveled the major European capitals incognito (anonymous in a relative way) to discover their scientific progress and learn from their ways of dealing with state affairs. Of special significance was Germany, from which he imported many philosophers and scientists and who’d later influence the Russian army. To this day, Germany is still a role model, when it comes to economics and had many of its people living in Russia for many generations (even though their Russian was in many cases bad or non-existent, thus also the name Немецкий or „mute“).
With the great number of bureaucratic, military and aristocratic changes that he introduced, the Russian zone of influence had extended. This set in motion a wave of intellectual thinking that would reach its peak with Ekatarina the Great but never lost its momentum until today. Also, the new military strength allowed Russia to extend into new territories and claim it as their own, helping the country giving it its well-known shape.
From this point on, the “enlightened” movement wasn’t stoppable anymore. His often radical reforms – including the forceful cutting of beards! – were often accompanied by opposition from the ruling elite. They, however, found their value, as they offered a way for every one of climbing the career ladder, not regarding their background or their hierarchy. A beautiful example would be the Tsaritsa Ekaratina, who had been a German princess but had become one of the most famous personalities herself.
Of course, Pjotr the Great may be remembered by many for even other achievements. It is worth mentioning that he strengthened the Russian predilection for two exquisite beverages: coffee and vodka. Both he consumed on a regular basis with great vigour, for which he’s also remembered. Few would object that vodka has a very special and important place in Russian soul and Russia is famous worldwide for this drink that the tsars themselves appreciated (for this reason it’s even more striking that the Russian president Vladimir Vladmirovitch Putin fully denies himself alcohol).
For the reasons above, I choose Pjotr I. as one of the most important people in Russian history and, even though he’s been dead for many centuries now, his influence can still be felt throughout this enormous North-eastern country. Unfortunately, none of us will be able to meet him again, but his spirit and soul can be embraced when one travels to the Sankt Petersburg – the city that was founded by Tsar Pjotr I. in 1703 – and enjoy a glass of vodka. He might be dead, but his legacy lives on – the Russian band Leningrad rightfully sings: “в питере – пить.”

And who is your Russian hero?  Come to Petrozavodsk to be fully immersed in the culture and history and start speaking Russian in 6 weeks. Choose a course here

KARELIAN SUMMER THROUGH THE EYES OF A PHOTOGRAPHER

Life in Petrozavodsk is like this: half an hour and you talk to nature

According to the statistics, there are more than 700 000 of photographers in Russia. You can imagine how hard it is to find your niche and come up with your own style. The city of Petrozavodsk might be proud of numerous of talented people and Igor Podgorny is definitely one of them. Once you saw the pictures of a famous Karelian photographer it seems no one could portray Russian nature with Karelian flavor better. Known as an outstanding Russian blogger and photographer Igor finds his inspiration in Karelian landscapes, forest spirits and water rhythms.

One of the best 5 Russian photographers prefers Petrozavodsk to Moscow

We have to admit Karelia was that lucky not from the very beginning. Igor moved to Petrozavodsk from Moscow only five years ago. But why does the ambitious young man with a spark of potential give up such a «fertile ground» for self realization? Igor was asked this question plenty of times and every time answers the same:
Moscow is not that comfortable city, long distances and traffic jams. Of course there are better career opportunities but here in Petrozavodsk my children can go to school by themselves and the best thing here is that it takes you nothing to go to a forest with kids, drink tea with them on the shore of Onego and get back home before it gets dark. People in Moscow are deprived of such a pleasure.

A beauty of Karelia helps me a lot!

Igor believes Karelia and Petrozavodsk are very photogenic and could serve a magical source of inspiration. We should take pictures of that unique land to be able to keep it through generations. To that purpose a life of photographer never reminds groundhog day: get up at 5am  to  catch the break of dawn today and tomorrow stay up all night to shoot the Northern lights – that happens quite often. Igor had been working at Greenpeace Russia and believes that a really good photo may resolve the most complicated and contradictive issue.

How to say I love you in Russian?

5 crucial expressions to survive in Russia

For those who has just started learning Russian language or planning a trip to Russia and knows only some common expressions from phrase book Enjoy Russian school’s made up a list of crucial Russian vocabulary. Why the survival lesson? The city of Petrozavodsk where we are situated is not that busy and intimidating as Moscow or St. Petersburg and people do not meet foreigners every single second. That’s why learning Russian here  is on the one hand super effective (people at the streets of Petrozavodsk talk to you only Russian) but on the other hand has it could be problematic sometimes for foreigner to find the way around (not for our students since they are always with Russian volunteers).  So here is our top 5.

Survival Russian phrases worth keeping in mind:

  1. По карте или наличными? With a card or cash? – You may always use gestures and point to your purse or a credit card to make people at the shop/ restaurant understands you. But to feel and act like a real Russian you better ask “Pa karte ily nalichnymi?”
  2. Кто последний? Who is last? Sometimes when in Russia you need to join the queue. But may face the situation when you enter the post office or bank branch and don’t see the start point of the queue. Here’s when you ask: “Кто последний?”
  3. Сколько? How many (much)? Even in Moscow and St. Petersburg you can find not only self-service shops but also “old school” mini-markets where you need to ask a сashier for the goods and prices. In that case that is very important to ask how many and how much something costs or what amount you’d like to buy. How many? = сколько? (Skolka?)
  4. Осторожно! Be careful! Not to witness a huge icicle from the roof kills a passer-by be ready to learn by heart Russian version of “be careful” – осторожно! (astarozhna!)
  5. Finally, the expression most frequently requested by foreigners. How to say I love you in Russian? Useful to learn because here we have the pronoun – Я (I) and the verb you use to talk about  love – любить.

KEEP CALM AND LOVE SNOW!

International annual contest of ice and snow sculptures in Petrozavodsk

While looking for a perfect Russian language course in Russia we pay attention not only to professionalism of Russian tutors but also to the eventful and interesting life of the Russian city we are going to stay. In February Karelian city of Petrozavodsk becomes the cultural and international center which gathers together people from the whole Republic and different countries. Traditional Russian and Karelian songs and dance styles, sport competitions, exhibitions and workshops – that is how the Contest of Hyperborea gained its’ popularity. Joining this colorful event makes learning Russian in Petrozavodsk thrilling, mysterious and wonderful!

Blowing off the snowflakes from Karelian legends and Russian history

When Russian people live with snow for that long (in Petrozavodsk – from November till April) they take it as an advantage and become very creative. “Let’s turn the massive snow cubes into masterpieces” they say. More than 100 participants create about 35 great stories and monuments with no regrets that they are in danger of melting. Artists come from Italy, France and Spain, Norway, Finland and Sweden, Belarus and Kazakhstan, Canada and the United States. The fact that some of them are professional sculptor does not play any role, because their material is snow and ice! Participants are given only one week to turn the giant ice/snow cube (there are two nominations and they can choose the material to work with) into the live story and after that the jury and Petrozavodsk citizens decide on the best one.
It is really difficult to decide what impress you more, artists or their masterpieces while you take a walk on the Onego lake embankment in February. The process of creation is so magnificent – you may see here Russian fairy tales’ characters coming to life and you feel the synergy of human being and Mother Nature. You can find here the scenes out of Karelian and Finnish national epic Kalevala, animals, outrageous and surreal characters.
It is like blowing off the snowflakes from legends and history: more time master spends with his creation, the more snow goes away. And every year artists bring to life new and extraordinary ideas.

What keeps people warm in the gloomy Karelian weather?

  • To let people of Petrozaavodsk fully enjoy the Festival organizers do their best:
  • They cook Fish soup – about 200 liters!
  • Arrange Fishermen contest and fire show;
  • Invite people of all ages to participate in ice-race called “Ice Onego”;
  • Organize workshops and exhibitions, compete in songs singing and outdoor Karelian games
Join Enjoy Russian group course in February  or choose an individual one and you will see (and feel) that Hyperborea is the coolest event ever!

TOP 5 RUSSIAN TONGUE TWISTERS TO SPEAK RUSSIAN WITHOUT ACCENT

Tongue twisters aren’t just silly poems that use very similar sounds

They’re a great way to improve your pronunciation and get your mouth moving in Russian! Tongue twisters are originally created for little kids to learn pronouncing difficult sounds, but they can serve a very real use for people studying Russian as a second language. For example, the tongue twister about Sasha could be especially useful to Russian language learners, because it contrasts the similar “s” and “sh” sounds in Russian:
ШЛА САША ПО ШОССЕ И СОСАЛА СУШКУ
The tongue twister about Mila is a great way to practice Russian hard and soft consonants and compare Ы and И; it puts different sounding vowels between similar-sounding consonants.
МАМА МЫЛА МИЛУ МЫЛОМ, МИЛА МЫЛО НЕ ЛЮБИЛ

The tongue twisters above are well-known in Russia and almost every Russian knows it, but not everyone can say them quickly. Russian native speakers also have difficulties with some Russian words. Here is a fragment of old Soviet movie “Карнавал” with famous actress Ирина Муравьёва, where she is trying to improve her pronunciation (she wants to be an actress) by reciting tongue twisters КУКУШКА КУКУШОНКУ КУПИЛА КАПЮШОН, НАДЕЛ КУКУШОНОК КАПЮШОН, КАК В КАПЮШОНЕ ОН СМЕШОН and ОТ ТОПОТА КОПЫТ ПЫЛЬ ПО ПОЛЮ ЛЕТИТ, ПЫЛЬ ПО ПОЛЮ ЛЕТИТ ОТ ТОПОТА КОПЫТ
Don’t bother to try to understand the meaning of the tongue twisters. Usually they are just silly poems with no special meaning, and their purpose is let you practice some difficult Russian sounds, so focus on the right pronunciation, but not on the meaning.

RUSSIAN IMPERATIVE MOOD (COMMAND FORM)

Imperative mood is very important in Russian!

And your first Russian word ЗДРАВСТВУЙТЕ is an imperative aspect of the verb ЗДРАВСТВОВАТЬ (to be healthy and wealthy). Did you know that?
How do we form imperatives? We need to conjugate a verb in the third person plural form and change the ending to -й (for the first group verbs) and -и (for the second group).

Here are a few examples:

1.ДЕЛАТЬ (First group verb)
ОНИ ДЕЛАЮТ —> ДЕЛАЙ
To make it formal add -те:
ДЕЛАЙ + ТЕ —> ДЕЛАЙТЕ
2. ГОВОРИТЬ (Second group verb)
ОНИ ГОВОРЯТ —> ГОВОРИ
To make it formal add -те:
ГОВОРИ + ТЕ —> ГОВОРИТЕ

Sometimes there is a soft sign instead of и or й

ВЕРИТЬ to believe – ОНИ ВЕРЯТ they believe – ВЕРЬ believe (imperative informal) – ВЕРЬТЕ believe (imperative formal)
БРОСИТЬ to throw – ОНИ БРОСЯТ (they’ll throw) – БРОСЬ throw (imperative informal) – БРОСЬТЕ throw (imperative formal)

Imperfective and perfective imperative are formed according to the same rule, but their functions are different! See the attached photo! And let me know if there are any questions left!

Use imperative in real life conversations with Russian in Russia! Come to Petrozavodsk winter course. Enroll now

5 FACTS PROVING RUSSIAN WINTER IS FOR FEARLESS!

Have reached the lowest point of Mariana Trench? Climbed Everest and took a trip inside in the crater of Icelandic volcano? Unless you’ve been to Russia, It doesn’t really count! After reading this you will probably want to experience Russian winter!

Join “Enjoy Russian” language school and challenge yourself!

Зиму мы перезимовали, осталось перезимовать весну –  We’ve overwintered  the winter, now we have to overwinter the spring!
  1. The weather is cruel. Yes, Russian weather always holds the top positions. The Russian village Oimyakon is known as the Cold Pole of the Earthwhere the temperature might hit -71C! And the locals still live their own lives without any problems. As for Karelia, we can’t be proud of that low temperature but still be ready to 25 degrees below. By the way Russians believe that if people fall in love in wintertime that kind of relations is the strongest and is going to last forever. Because usually people put so many layers of clothes that it’s really hard to see a person behind, not to mention falling in love.
  2. Ice swimming is pretty popular. Despite the cruelty of Russian winter people in Russia tend to swim a lot! And we talk about ice swimming of course, not just the swimming pool. On January 19 Russian Orthodox Christians celebrate religious holiday when they can wash away the sins by bathing into the ice water. According to the statistics approximately 5 000 of Petrozavodsk citizens swim in 20 specially equipped spots all over the city.  Even little kids are long to be a part of this Russian Walrus club.
  3. 90C in Banya. Some people do not wait for a certain date to enjoy ice cold water. They swim on regular bases after each Banya session. The average temperature may exceed 90C. Sometimes they even spend the whole day in Banya massaging themselves with bunches of dried branches and leaves from bearch or oak, drinking green tea and jumping into the snow.  Banya is believed to be a good option for getting rid of toxins and gaining energy.
  4. Ice fishing is not for everyone. What could be more romantic than sitting for 5-6 hours in a row in the freezing cold? Russian fishermen are often called the craziest people in the world. To become a professional in all types of fishing techniques takes time and patience. Some say it’s rather a lifestyle than just a hobby.
  5. Holiday season is pretty long. Only the strongest can keep celebrating on and on for 9 days:) The New Years’ Eve and then Christmas. And some family gathering in between. From the Russians point of view the festive season is the good option to prepare yourself to the year of hard work and to make a list of New Year resolutions.
And know you should answer a simple question: are you ready for this? If yes, then come to Enjoy Russian language school in February to take our 4-week course and present yourself unique and priceless memories!

Reach fast progress in Russian in a short time!

четверг, 14 сентября 2017 г.

Distance is nothing if you want to learn Russian in Russia.

Each year students from distant countries prove that. They take long trips to participate in Full Russian Language Immersion Programs and learn Russian fast.

8824 km to achieve desired goal

Exactly that distance should be covered if you live in Singapore and want to study Russian in Petrozavodsk. Last year we were happy to host students from this country for the first time.

Tong and Kay Lin

Tong and Kay Lin have been studying in our school for 2 weeks. They tried to do as much as they can. They even visited Saint Petersburg and Velikiy Novgorod while studying in Petrozavodsk. But the main result of their staying in our city is Russian language progress:
«I improved my knowledge in the six grammatical cases and also picked up useful everyday phrases from the program», – Kay Lin
«I improve a lot in speaking and listening and I hope to come for 3 months study in summer period», – Tong.

Jackie

In 2017 another student from Singapore has been studying in the school for 10 weeks. When Jackie came she couldn’t say a word in Russian. By the end of the program she could write a small text and tell about her life in Petrozavodsk.

Debra

The most admirable student for us is Debra. She has come to Petrozavodsk to study Russian, but she is going to stay here less than for one week. She explains that she doesn’t have time to stay longer, but she really wants to study Russian. Just after her arrival to Petrozavodsk she came to the school and had 2 individual Russian classes.
As you see distance is nothing for those who really want to know Russian! And would you like to study this language? Choose any course and come to Petrozavodsk!
