IF YOU LOVE RAIN, GO TO PETROZAVODSK. IF YOU DO NOT, ALSO GO! WHY?

Why to choose Petrozavodsk to study Russian in Russia?

If Moscow and Saint Petersburg are the only cities you remember when talk about Russia, it is time to find a new direction! Visit Petrozavodsk! It is small and cozy city, good for life, rest and study Russian! Students of the “EnjoyRussian” Language School tell you why to come to Petrozavodsk to study Russian in Russia and have amazing vacation in Summer 2018. So why?

Improve Russian skills

Because there is a brilliant language-school in this town. In daily lessons of four hours, we – a group of Swiss students from Basel – improved our Russian-skills. We were not just teached in grammar. We also watched funny “multfilms”, read texts and discussed about Russia und Switzerland. But the lessons are just one argument, why you should go to Petrozavodsk.

Make Russian friends

The other argument for a stay: the school’s volunteers. They do everything, to make their foreign students happy. They organise national-food-parties, lovely days at the beach (beautiful weather inclusive), trips to Kizhy-Island, to St. Petersburg or to a banja. They also help you to find the next disco or internet-café, they give you any assistance at the railway station you need – while queuing up for hours or while buying your ticket to everywhere. The volunteers are the most important argument, why you should join Petrozavodsk for your study in Russia.

Feel Russian hospitality at its best

But there is another one: the guest-families. They do everything to make you feel like a little Tsar and to improve your Russian. They even invite you to their Datshas. Russian hospitality at its best. That is what is important, that is how you learn about country and language.
Well then, who cares about a few raindrops?

THE LEGENDS OF THE NORTH

Go berserk and enjoy ancient sagas at Medieval times International Festival in Karelia!

Telling the truth not every student who comes to learn Russian language in the North of Russia lives with the host families. Of course Russian homestay is the best option however sometimes the call of the wild breaks down the system of “everything is on the right track”. The historical Campus on the shore of Onego lake (the 2d biggest lake in Europe by the way) is going to be established in August 2018. For those who seek some unique places to visit in Russia and some authentic activities to try the “Legends of the North Festival” is the first must-see-item!

Learn how to set a fire both to your Russian trip and on the ground

We’d already written the post about Karelia and North-West of Russia as a place where many legends were born. Golden Mermaids, stones  “seidy” and Karelian Nessy, stories about brave men who conquered the death and forest creatures helping travelers to find a way.  They say Karelia is a land for spiritually strong Russian men. According to the legend Karelian people ancestors came from the North and to survive in these harsh weather conditions they should have been pure in heart and strong in spirit.
“Legends of the North” Festival proves all mentioned above and is slowly becoming the event people associate Karelia with. On 5th of  August citizens are invited to be fully immersed by the authentic Nordic atmosphere of 9-11 centuries, try on some elements of clothes, armor and weapons, get acquainted with historical handicrafts and take part in numerous unique workshops and talk sessions:
  • Moulded ceramics workshop
  • Scandinavian poetry of scalds
  • Elementary leather goods. Types of hides and skins. Their destination. Where to search for materials.
  • the Swedish overtone flute making class
  • archery and throwing knives workshops

The best place in Russia for those who’re attracted by the North

Not only the sounds of folk bands performance might be heard here but also metallic clang from everywhere! So the bravest ones may take a sword and become the best in the battle.
“That was the greatest show! The level of organizing was really high, we could take pictures with the warriors, fight with swords, watch and photograph handicrafts and life, learn something new and communicate with people who can’t imagine their life without the Legends of the North!” (says one of the participants in 2017)
Don’t you think it’s your turn to try this? Choose a course and come to Karelia!

We offer Russian language programs for foreign students of any age and any level of proficiency in Russian – from beginner (А0) to advanced (С1/С2). Each course curriculum is carefully planned and structured. Every level course consists of 1-week modules, so a “module” is a portion of a language curriculum that is taught for one week.
We chose modular system in order to establish clear and realistic language learning objectives. The content of each module (study program) can be found on our website. Study process at school is conducted carefully according to the program, so our students know for sure what they are going to learn at “Enjoy Russian” long before they arrive in Petrozavodsk.
If you want to find out your level of Russian, contact our students’ advisor, and then take a short grammar and vocabulary test that will help us determine your proficiency level. If you are in the middle of a level, A1+ or A2+, you can join the course in the middle of it. So, let’s say you know the material of 3 out of 6 modules of our A1-A2 study program. Our advisor will recommend you the dates when you can join the course starting from the 4th module.

HOW TO LEARN THE RUSSIAN ALPHABET QUICKLY

Do you want to learn Russian? Start with the alphabet!

The Russian alphabet is based on Cyrillic script the same as some other European languages (Bulgarian, Belarusion, Serbian, and etc.). It consists of 33 letters: 10 vowels, 21 consonants, and 2 signs (hard and soft).

To make learning Russian an easy thing you can follow these tips:

1. Memorise the letters in groups
  • Group 1. Letters that are written and pronounced the same as English ones:
А, О, К, М, Т
Russian “A” must be pronounced as “a” in “car” or “u” in “cut”. Not as “a” in “man” – that would be wrong.
Other letters are pronounced exactly the same as in English.
  • Group 2. Letters that exist in English, but are pronounced differently (used for a different sound than in English):
В = V like in “vodka”
Е = YE like in “yeah”
Н = N like in “nose”
Р = R !Rolling R! It doesn’t sound the same as English “R”! You should place the tip of your tongue right after the upper teeth, breathe out to push it with air until it starts vibrating. You need to practice regularly until your tongue muscles get strong enough to be able to produce the required vibration.
С = S like in “sun”
Х = H like in “hot dog”, though it’s stronger than the English “h” sound
У = U like in “put”, not like in “cut”!
  • Group 3. Absolutely new letters that do not exist in English:
Б = B like in “bar”
Г = G like in “garden”
Д = D like in “dance”
Ё = YO like in “yolk”
Ж sounds like “s” in “pleasure”
З = Z like in “zoo”
И = I like in “kitten”
Й  is called a short “i” sound, and sounds like “y” in “yogurt”
Л = L like in “love”
Ф = F like in “flower”
Ц = TS like in “its”
Ч = CH like in “chess”
Ш = SH like in “shop”
Щ = SHCH / SH like in “sheep”
Ъ – hard sign, which is used to separate cyllables one from another
Ы is a bit similar to “i” in “it”, but must be pronounced further down the throat, and be more short.
Ь – soft sign, makes consonants foft
Э = E like in “vet”
Ю sonds like “u” in “pure”
Я = YA like in “yard”
2. Listen to audio recordings of Russian native speakers pronounce the letters and words with the letters, and repeat after them. Do it as much as possible. It will help you to form a good pronounciation.
3. Play games with the letters
4. Listen to funny songs and sing along!
5. Ask your Russian friends, if you make the sounds right and get 101 more tips from them about how you should learn the Russian alphabet;)

Hope you will enjoy learning the Russian language. If you want to enjoy it more, join our Russian language courses in Russia.

Volunteering is a way of life!

People who make your stay in Russia unforgettable

Do you know why students find learning Russian language in Petrozavodsk very comfortable and encouraging? Russian volunteers! It is basically a group of guys always ready to answer the questions, teach you Russian jokes and reveal the facts about stereotypes, take a walk with you and visit cool places and events here in Petrozavodsk. Long story short they are always here for you to support, communicate and help to find a way around. Back in 2003 when Enjoy Russian school was found we’ve got about 10 Russian volunteers, 15 years later we are happy and proud to have more than 50 of them!

A way to break the stereotypes about Russia and explore the parts of our planet

Here is an essay from our active, helpful and very dedicated volunteer Lilit:
“I always like meeting new people, discovering countries and of course helping people. I came to the school on May last year. We met foreign students for the first time. It was exciting. I was so inspired so I continue doing that. The summer 2017 I will remember for a long time. Whole summer we spent with Enjoy Russian and the foreign students. Let us remember the highlights of summer. There was a lesson of making Karelian pie "Калитки" for a group of foreigners and I was a translator. That was so interesting experience to get to know something new and help them to get closer to Russian culture.

Once students and volunteers went for barbeque. That was so funny day. We went there by bus where so much people were, it was so tight and we were falling on each other. We were playing volleyball on the beach. Our foreign guests even tried to swim in the lake, so crazy because the water was cold!   One day we went to the cafe, we were talking English and when I wanted to make order the waiter thought that I was a foreigner he said: "Can you speak Russian?" that was funny.
There were national dishes parties - where students and volunteers should make their national dish and that was delicious. To try real Belgian chocolate or Italian tiramisu what can be better? We went to new places in Karelia where even I have not been yet, we wanted to show everything to our guests. This was amazing summer with lots of new people. Foreign students really liked our city and they promised to come back.
Definitely, I kept on helping after summer. One day British students invited us to the English breakfast. We all know from the school about that and finally I had opportunity to try it first-hand.

I so grateful for that experience that gave many things. I met so much people all around the world and made good friends. I practiced my languages skills. Now I speak English every day, tried to speak French and that even made me start learning Italian.  It is such a great feeling to help someone, tried to break all the stereotypes about Russia and explore other parts of our planet. That also help to know our Karelia better. That was so inspiring experience I can say I would like to do something similar on my future job. Thank you Enjoy Russian! That is not the end, looking forward to the next adventure.”

Thank you Lilit! Hope you continue staying with us and meeting cool guys from all over the world! And if you want to get aquainted with our great volunteers feel free to join Enjoy Russian school! Choose a course here!

LEARN RUSSIAN AND BE A PART OF A POLAR EXPEDITION!

International kite-race in Karelia

Do you know what Russian region holds the 4th position on the list of most popular places to travel? Karelia. Every year more than 2 million tourists visit the Republic with the unique nature, unbelievable sunsets and ideal-for-meditation atmosphere. It is slowly becoming the land of cultural festivals and events for Karelian people to honor their ancestors’ traditions. Moreover Karelia has always been famous for extreme sports and spectacular activities such as annual rally competition, water freestyle, rafting, hunters’ traditional festival and many others. All the Russian language learners who are somehow into sports should definitely visit Karelia this spring.  From 6 till 10 of March on the shore of lake Onego the International winter kite-marathon TOKE (Trans-Onego Kite Enduro) is going to take place. 3 days of ice, snow and wind

9 countries are to compete on the second largest lake in Europe

Sportsmen from Denmark, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Romania and Russia take part in this competition annually since 2012. They say the race on the second largest lake in the European continent is very similar to a survival challenge. The competitors (each team consists of 2 people) have to leave like real scouts: build their own campfire, pitch a tent and stay outdoors for two nights. It is an incredible polar expedition.  The teams sale through the route and navigate through the checkpoints led by their groups leaders. The route covers 350 km around the most remarkable places of Onego including the stop near the world famous Kizhi islands.
The organizers never forget about the colorful opening of the contest with local food, traditional gamesn and performances to provide the participants with the inspiration to a great race.

You still have time to register to the event or to come as a participant! Join Enjoy Russian language school on March 5 and have a great time full of new emotions! (Sign up for a course here)

ENJOYABLE TEACHERS OF ENJOY RUSSIAN SCHOOL

What do students think about 12-week Russian language course in Petrozavodsk

The best way to understand whether or not the certain Russian language course meets your expectations is to ask people. Here in Petrozavodsk Enjoy Russian language school students are always ready to share their results and progress in Russian as well as to assess their living in a Russian family and communication with volunteers. This autumn we met cool guys who stayed with us for 3 months! Here is Judit’s testimonial:
“The content of the language course was excellent. Good studybook with the most useful topics. The groups were small so it forced us to speak Russian. I’ve enjoyed our teachers with their games, discussions, etc. very much! I could always ask questions even if they didn’t have anything to do with the topics. The teacher always answered in a satisfying way. I had a perfect accommodation and the best host mom ever! Super friendly, helpful and communicative, of course we’ll keep in touch! I had a nice and cozy bedroom, perfect learning area with desk and couch. I always felt welcomed.
The Russian volunteers were very nice and helpful. I’ve enjoyed the people very much. They showed us good restaurants and gave us interesting facts about the city. Administration of the program was excellent. I could always come and ask if something would have been unclear. I would like to participate in the program again: good learning progress, motivating atmosphere, nice city, friendly and helpful people. I would recommend this program to others as it’s perfect to learn Russian! I truly liked everything!”

KARELIAN SUMMER THROUGH THE EYES OF A PHOTOGRAPHER

Life in Petrozavodsk is like this: half an hour and you talk to nature

According to the statistics, there are more than 700 000 of photographers in Russia. You can imagine how hard it is to find your niche and come up with your own style. The city of Petrozavodsk might be proud of numerous of talented people and Igor Podgorny is definitely one of them. Once you saw the pictures of a famous Karelian photographer it seems no one could portray Russian nature with Karelian flavor better. Known as an outstanding Russian blogger and photographer Igor finds his inspiration in Karelian landscapes, forest spirits and water rhythms.

One of the best 5 Russian photographers prefers Petrozavodsk to Moscow

We have to admit Karelia was that lucky not from the very beginning. Igor moved to Petrozavodsk from Moscow only five years ago. But why does the ambitious young man with a spark of potential give up such a «fertile ground» for self realization? Igor was asked this question plenty of times and every time answers the same:
Moscow is not that comfortable city, long distances and traffic jams. Of course there are better career opportunities but here in Petrozavodsk my children can go to school by themselves and the best thing here is that it takes you nothing to go to a forest with kids, drink tea with them on the shore of Onego and get back home before it gets dark. People in Moscow are deprived of such a pleasure.

A beauty of Karelia helps me a lot!

Igor believes Karelia and Petrozavodsk are very photogenic and could serve a magical source of inspiration. We should take pictures of that unique land to be able to keep it through generations. To that purpose a life of photographer never reminds groundhog day: get up at 5am  to  catch the break of dawn today and tomorrow stay up all night to shoot the Northern lights – that happens quite often. Igor had been working at Greenpeace Russia and believes that a really good photo may resolve the most complicated and contradictive issue.

Former Helsinki’s deputy mayor considers Petrozavodsk an ideal city for learning Russian

Ilkka-Christian about dramatic history  of Petrozavodsk and his learning Russian experience

As you probably know Petrozavodsk where you can learn Russian language is situated close to the European Union and Karelia has a common border with Finland. May be that’s why many of Enjoy Russian students come here to practice Russian from this county. This autumn we were happy to host very hardworking and loyal student (who has been studying with us several times) Ilkka-Christian. What makes students come to Enjoy Russian more than once? Here is the testimonial of our Finnish student and his impressions from city and the school both in Russian and Finnish languages:
Kieliopintojen kannalta kaupunki on ihanteellinen, kaikki on lähellä. Enjoy Russian -koulua voin kokemukseni perusteella lämpimästi suositella – ajanmukaiset puitteet, erinomaiset opettajat, toimivat järjestelyt ja hyvä hinta-laatu-suhde.

“NOW I CAN MAKE RUSSIAN BORSCH!”

Jack’s experience at Enjoy Russian and a piece of advice for Russian language learners

To progress forward with the Russian language goals one needs a real case.  Here’s a short interview with Jack Lawlor who had been learning Russian language at our school and was a volunteer both in the International Summer Camp for kids and teens in Petrozavodsk and English language studio. Jack was studying at Enjoy Russian school twice and achieved great results in Russian. We asked what made him learning Russian and why he decided to take his second trip to Petrozavodsk.

Tell a bit about yourself and why have you started learning Russian?

I’m from Boston and I came here because I’ve been studying Russian language in school and I loved it, I thought it was fantastic. Grammar’d really appealed to me I found the culture interesting so I decided to continue my studies in more depth here (in Petrozavodsk).

What was your first impression from Petrozavodsk and Russia itself ?

I came here first 2 years ago and it’s kind of funny thing to remember because everything seemed so big! And now when I come back for the second time (I’ve been here for couple of months here straight now) it’s very small, maybe because I’ve adjusted to it.

When did you come to recognition you should practice your Russian with locals?

After some situations when I used some Russian word that ends up being just either totally not right or old like the word ИБО (потому что, because. People do not use in in modern Russian). I used it one time in a conversation and somebody laughed at me. That’s why you need practice!

What did you like about being a volunteer in the Summer Camp for kids and teens?

The teachers I worked with were fantastic. Getting to know all the kids was fantastic too and thinking about my native language in a way I never thought about it before definitely was a new experience. Working in a Camp was so much fun! All around are fantastic people. Everyone was welcoming and very friendly. First I was a student of Russian and then I was a volunteer in English classes, it was interesting to look at things from both sides and gain a little bit of experience in that.

What can you say about your Russian host family?

My host family was super nice, very tasty food very hospitable and happy to talk to me. My host mom even showed me how to cook some stuff, for example Russian borsch!

What Russian cities would you like to visit and why have you chosen Petrozavodsk to learn Russian?

The part of the reason I came to Petrozavodsk is that I talked to other people and their advice was that.  Yeah you could go to Moscow or St. Petersburg but they are so metropolitan,  it’s more like generalized European cities but not Russian. That’s why I chose Petrozavodsk. But  I’ve never been to Moscow and  would definitely visit it. I’d like to travel around Siberia too and go to Baikal.

What food from America do you miss here and what Russian food will you miss back home?

Here I miss a good apple pie! Russian food that I’m going to miss.. Well I can make borsch now! I also know how to make kalitki! There is a supermarket in Boston that sells pel’meni. So I can get those too.

What would you advice to people who just start learning Russian?

I would say avoid the temptation to translate! It’s tough at the beginning but it’s how you start defining new Russian words and the ones you already know, that makes all come together a lot quicker.

Russian vs. American. What is the difference?

I feel like Russians seem a bit less approachable (on the streets for example), they smile a bit less but once you actually talk to them they are so friendly, there is always a bit barrier to overcome. But in all Russians are very similar to American people.

In what 3 words would you describe Enjoy Russian school?

Friendly, immersive and welcoming!
Thank you Jack! We hope to see you in Petrozavodsk soon! If you want to become a volunteer in Russia or just learn the language and travel the country feel free to choose one of our courses.   Haven’t seen Russian video lessons with Jack? Enjoy!
