THE HUNGER GAMES SCALE

Russian North Hunting Traditions’ Festival

Have you ever tried to set a fire without a single match somewhere in the forests of Russia? We bet you haven’t! As well as never ever had you worn ancient Karelian traditional hunters’ clothes or eaten salmon bonfire soup. But no regrets, especially for those who come to learn the Russian language at Enjoy Russian School in Karelia. In September 2018 the Karelian city of Sortavala (North-West of Russia) holds one of the most epic and historically significant celebrations – Hunting Traditions festival.

Russian hunting comic-con is a must for chefs, sportsmen and photographers

And of course for anyone who likes spectacular and colorful events. Why is it held in Karelia? Because Russian forests in the North-West are famous for extremely rich flora and fauna, breathtaking landscapes and unique spots ancient people had been exploring.
The one-day-long festival starts with the welcoming words about the significance of hunting traditions for Karelians. Guests will be able to amuse themselves on several stages:
  1.  cooking competition where professionals and amateurs cook a hunting soup from the same set of products in accordance with their own recipe.
  2.  hounds exhibition – experts will tell about the different breeds features and the way they are evaluated
  3.  Photo-hunting competition – the participants are given a fragment  of a photo of an animal and look for the place of its living
  4.  Shooting exhibition and competition.
  5.  Re-enactors performance – guests of the Festival have a unique opportunity to see the life and culture of medieval Karelia and even take part in the battle.
  6.  kids’ playgrounds, crafts workshops, and fire-shows will also make you fall in love with the atmosphere.

Participants say

“Hunting for Karelian people was always about unity with nature, a careful attitude to forests gifts. Today we were able to look into the past! The organizers showed us the way ancient hunters looked in the Middle Ages, how they prepared for the hunt, made weapons, sewed special clothes and lit the fire. Amazing atmosphere and a great performance!”
Want to forget about Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for a while? Come to Karelia this autumn! The Russian language group course starts on 3 of September. Sign up here!

WANT TO PASS FOR RUSSIAN? EAT FISH!

Kalakunda: traditional Fish holiday in Karelia

We all know that tastes differ. Dutch people are crazy about stroopwafels, French can’t imagine themselves without camembert and Russians are believed to eat caviar daily. But actually, here in the North-West of Russia we love fish more than caviar! As you know Enjoy Russian School is situated in the land of lakes and the “fish tradition” of Karelian people goes back to the settlement times when people had to take the advantages of generous Mother Nature. In August 2018 Russians living in Karelia will celebrate the Fish holiday KALAKUNDA. What does it mean and how do we celebrate it?

Traditional Russian activities to enjoy the fish fest

Karelia is well known for its fishery. First and foremost Kalakunda holiday is a fishermen competition. About 150 professionals compete in trout hooking on the river Lososynka. Last year winner has caught 2 trout with the total weight of 3 kg (approximately 6.6 pounds).
The holiday program offers a variety of activities for adults and children. Of course, everything is connected with fish – you can buy fish, can make souvenirs from fish, cook the traditional pie, enjoy the performances in which fish is the ultimate superhero. But one of the most important things is that you may listen to the ancient tales and sagas about Karelian heroes.
What else can you do here?
  • Take a picture of the reindeer
  • learn traditional Karelian dance;
  • play outdoor games;
  • take part in the workshops and learn how to make woodenware and furniture, fish bones jewelry!

One fish-idiom to sound like a Russian

One of the most common idioms in Russia is connected with the fish: как рыба в воде (kak ryba v vad’e)
Literal translation – like a fish in water. It means to feel comfortable somewhere.
Example:  Хотя он приехал в школу Enjoy Russian всего две недели назад, он чувствовал себя как рыба в воде. (Even though he came to Enjoy Russian school just two weeks ago he felt very comfortable)

STAY ACTIVE AND RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

\

“Karjala Marathon” is to take place in the north-west of Russia

Russians interest in healthy lifestyle and sport events is growing year by year. If you believe in physical power of your body more than in your car when it comes to traveling come to Russia and run for your life! “Karjala Marathon” is calimed to be one of the most colorful race in the whole North-West of Russia. The annual event brings together kids and adults from Karelia and other Russian regions and cities – Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novgorod, Archangelsk and Murmansk. Lerning Russian language in autumn 2018 is a great opportunity to see by yourself that sport and health do not have any boundaries and language barriers!

Russian “Lagom”: is 10 km just enough?

As for the details: the route (both adults) is 10 km long. Pretty harsh, isn’t it? But professional sportsmen say one should not get into panic and just choose an even pace throughout the whole  run-session.  As for the main advantage of the route  it is incredibly picturesque as it lies right by the lake Pryazhinskoe (about 60 km from the capital of Karelia). Stony lake side, tall pines and amazing views give you  extra strenght on your way and make you feel nature’s energy. But stay focused on the race, with this beauty it’s very easy to find yourself “beating around the bush”:)

Eat kalitki and get carried away by Russian tradional rhytms!

Right after the race do not leave immediately because the cultural program of the festival is definitely worth checking out. Musical and national folklore bands, cooking workshops and traditional games competitons will show Karelian history of 2, 3 and 4 generations!
Participants say: “The race was the final point of our vacation in Karelia. The organizers arranged a real national holiday on this day! We were extremely hapy to see the medals from shungite (rare mineral which can be found only in Karelia) were waiting for us at the finish point. During the race fans were entertained by creative bamds  and even Karelian Santa Claus! No one felt bored!”
“An excellent opportunity to relax, to be surprised, to gain new impressions, to visit Karelia! A stunning level of organization and excellent weather caused a storm of positive emotions from participating in the Karelian Running Festival!”

If you feel like trying something new this autumn do not hesitate and come to learn Russian at Enjoy Russian school and stay healthy&active! Choose a course here

IF YOU LOVE RAIN, GO TO PETROZAVODSK. IF YOU DO NOT, ALSO GO! WHY?

Why to choose Petrozavodsk to study Russian in Russia?

If Moscow and Saint Petersburg are the only cities you remember when talk about Russia, it is time to find a new direction! Visit Petrozavodsk! It is small and cozy city, good for life, rest and study Russian! Students of the “EnjoyRussian” Language School tell you why to come to Petrozavodsk to study Russian in Russia and have amazing vacation in Summer 2018. So why?

Improve Russian skills

Because there is a brilliant language-school in this town. In daily lessons of four hours, we – a group of Swiss students from Basel – improved our Russian-skills. We were not just teached in grammar. We also watched funny “multfilms”, read texts and discussed about Russia und Switzerland. But the lessons are just one argument, why you should go to Petrozavodsk.

Make Russian friends

The other argument for a stay: the school’s volunteers. They do everything, to make their foreign students happy. They organise national-food-parties, lovely days at the beach (beautiful weather inclusive), trips to Kizhy-Island, to St. Petersburg or to a banja. They also help you to find the next disco or internet-café, they give you any assistance at the railway station you need – while queuing up for hours or while buying your ticket to everywhere. The volunteers are the most important argument, why you should join Petrozavodsk for your study in Russia.

Feel Russian hospitality at its best

But there is another one: the guest-families. They do everything to make you feel like a little Tsar and to improve your Russian. They even invite you to their Datshas. Russian hospitality at its best. That is what is important, that is how you learn about country and language.
Well then, who cares about a few raindrops?

LEARN RUSSIAN AND BE A PART OF A POLAR EXPEDITION!

International kite-race in Karelia

Do you know what Russian region holds the 4th position on the list of most popular places to travel? Karelia. Every year more than 2 million tourists visit the Republic with the unique nature, unbelievable sunsets and ideal-for-meditation atmosphere. It is slowly becoming the land of cultural festivals and events for Karelian people to honor their ancestors’ traditions. Moreover Karelia has always been famous for extreme sports and spectacular activities such as annual rally competition, water freestyle, rafting, hunters’ traditional festival and many others. All the Russian language learners who are somehow into sports should definitely visit Karelia this spring.  From 6 till 10 of March on the shore of lake Onego the International winter kite-marathon TOKE (Trans-Onego Kite Enduro) is going to take place. 3 days of ice, snow and wind

9 countries are to compete on the second largest lake in Europe

Sportsmen from Denmark, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Romania and Russia take part in this competition annually since 2012. They say the race on the second largest lake in the European continent is very similar to a survival challenge. The competitors (each team consists of 2 people) have to leave like real scouts: build their own campfire, pitch a tent and stay outdoors for two nights. It is an incredible polar expedition.  The teams sale through the route and navigate through the checkpoints led by their groups leaders. The route covers 350 km around the most remarkable places of Onego including the stop near the world famous Kizhi islands.
The organizers never forget about the colorful opening of the contest with local food, traditional gamesn and performances to provide the participants with the inspiration to a great race.

You still have time to register to the event or to come as a participant! Join Enjoy Russian language school on March 5 and have a great time full of new emotions! (Sign up for a course here)

To learn Russian for less than 2 months? Just a piece of cake!

“There is no any sounds, colors, images and thoughts – both complicated and easy ones – for which there is no accurate equivalent in the Russian language” Konstantin Paustovskiy

May be that’s why in terms of obstacles learning Russian can be put in the same raw with Icelandic or Chinese.  To become fluent in a language means spending hours, weeks and years of patient and assiduous work. The stakes are high and pitfalls many. But firstly, no language is easy. And secondly, once you became determined or even obsessed with the Idea, you can hit this. Even within a month. Sounds impossible, right? Not for Enjoy Russian language school.

Our study program has already helped 1200 students to learn Russian

Here is a brief review of Enjoy Russian school program designed to improve the language skills or to set up close ties with it.
A0/A1
As for the basics: on this stage you are expected to get familiar with alphabet, numbers, most commonly used nouns and verbs. What is important – the number of hours you spend on a certain topic varies depending on the level of its difficulty. For example, you are more likely to study verbs of motion for 12 hours and week days only for 4.
A1/A2
Moving slowly to the next level you eventually find yourself able to express your thoughts on the same topic but way deeper than before. For instance, you already knew how to invite a friend for dinner. But now you can also describe in details what you are going to eat, why you’ve chosen this particular restaurant and ask your friend about politics or economics.
A2/B1
Congratulations! At this step you see not only the “flat surface” of a language. From here on it is a 3-dimension perception for you. You can talk about the past and the future. About your personal experience and global problems. And the grammar opens up gerund, compound sentences, declination of family names. Even if you face some tricky situations here you are so proud of yourself that you don’t want to turn around.

Some say it looks like Iceland

Karelia is a unique place. Even if you live here for a long time you never stop admiring its nature and beauty. You fall in love with it immediately. Let’s travel with us to the North of Karelia and take a look at mysterious landscapes.

Stones

You’ve probably heard about trolls in Norway – the mysterious creatures living in the forests and hiding from the sun. Karelian people believe their ancestors way of life also had something to do with magic stones. So called idol stones are located all over the Republic and only some people know how to find them. These rocks are believed to cure severe diseases and give prosperity as well as to protect from bad creatures. They played a significant role in ritual life.

Water. Ladoga lake

Karelia is known as a land of lakes and rivers. Just imagine – we have more than 60 000 lakes. And water is the main place for legends to come out. There is our own Loch Ness monster living in Karelian Ladoga lake probably brother or sister to Scottish one. “Long neck and massive silver body”. The description from locals attracts not only tourists but also groups of scientists ready to come here and study the lake in depth.
And the White Sea. Our final destination for today. We leave you here in tranquility and peace. Just take a look at the pictures and forget about everything for a while.
Some say Karelia looks like Iceland. Other people think it reminds of Finland. One thing is undeniable – you should come here to see the difference. Choose one of our courses and explore mysterious Karelia with Enjoy Russian School!

Do you know the most attractive place in Petrozavodsk?
Our city is located on the shore of Onega Lake. It is the second largest lake in Europe after Lake Ladoga.
And Onega Lake Embankment is one of the most popular places in Petrozavodsk in all seasons. Both citizens and tourists spend much time there. You can walk along the embankment watching interesting sculptures and trying to guess what they are, making pictures or just sit on the bench watching the lake, relaxing etc. You can’t view the whole Onega Lake from the Embankment, but Petrozavodsk Bay. Still it is enough to fill all the magnificence and strength of the lake.
Let's read what Antonio from Italy has written about the lake in winter: "Зимой озеро покрыто льдом, и, если солнце светит, ландшафт даёт ощущение свободы". A Russian speaker couldn't say it better!
