Is learning Russian via Skype effective?

Yes, if your course fulfills certain requirements:

1) Regularity. We recommend to take at least 2 lessons a week to start to speak Russian in a short period of time. Some of our students take online lessons every day. 1 lesson lasts 45 minutes – it’s not so much to postpone your progress in Russian if you’re really interested in achieving results.

2) Professional course with a native speaker according to an individual plan. The teacher should take into account your goals, learning speed and interests to keep you motivated though the whole course and aware of the progress you make. You will monitor your own results with an experienced teacher.

3) Can-do attitude. It’s an open secret that hard work is the price of success. It’s not the teacher who makes your knowledge, but you. Your teacher is a guide who helps you through the exciting journey on your way to fluency in the Russian language, and of course you should be self-organized and ready to do homework, read books etc. But when your online lessons are focused on your individual progress with the help of creative teaching methods, you study willingly and it’s much more like a hobby than a routine.

 Russian БЛИН: say or not to say?

Have you heard that Russian word BLIN has many meanings? It is actually one of the most common words in Russia because you can hear it absolutely everywhere. The first meaning of this word is PANCAKE. Does it mean that Russians eat pancakes all the time? 

Not really. Another meaning for this word is a negative БЛИН. It is a synonym to English DAMN!

For example, we can say:

• Вчера у бабушки были очень вкусные блины – Yesterday my grandma’s pancakes were superb!
  OR:

• Блин, я потерял мамину любимую книгу – Damn, I’ve lost mom’s favorite book.

• Я опоздал на поезд! Блин! – I missed the train. Damn it!

As you see, in Russian these two words are similar, but as they have different meanings we translate them into English in different ways.

However over the course of time the meaning of the word slightly changed, it became more neutral than positive. DLitt Natalia Bogdanova explains: “Nowadays we can hear the word BLIN mostly at home, in shops and cafes but not in offices and educational institutions. If initially it had only a negative meaning, now the native speakers do not put up any emotions into it.”According to the statistics, this word is number one by a frequency of use in everyday conversations.
