Our students say:

"We really liked the literature club and we are looking forward to the next meeting. I am passionate about literature and I often get involved in similar events. This was the first time I did it in Russian! It was interesting to discuss a story by a contemporary Russian writer. Having to express our views and observations in Russian was a very good practice and challenge." - Agnieszka, UK, 2016

What magical snowy weather is now in Petrozavodsk! It's so nice to sit in the warmth of our cozy Center and to talk about the "Blizzard". Not the one in the street, but the one that was written by Pushkin. This is a story about love and miracle that can happen to people in this kind of snowy day. Our students from England and Spain, Agnieszka, Cassia and Lydia and Russian volunteer Nastya could immerse themselves into the Pushkin's fairy tale while drinking a cup of hot tea. And they have won a million in the game "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?". Isn't that amazing that they were able to answer all the questions about Pushkin?! And how about you? Do you know who was Pushkin's grand-grandfather? Try to choose the correct answer: A. Spaniard, B. Portuguese, C. African, D. Englishman???

А. испанцем, Б. португальцем, В. африканцем. Г. англичанином

Do you know that...?
Slavic alphabet (славянская азбука) was not just a certain amount of separate letters . The name of each letter had a special meaning. So it was an edifying book and a set of rules for all the Slavs. It taught a person to honour the knowledge, ancestors, God, to develop yourself and your mind. While learning this Slavic alphabet people were getting knowledge how to live.
Modern Russian alphabet is much easier. It doesn’t have such a meaning. Just letters.

THE MYSTERY OF THE RUSSIAN SOUL
There are many myths about Russians. Let's see what do we have in real life!

Russians are anti-laughters

It is generally believed that Russians don’t smile a lot. That’s partly true, but it’s not because they’re not funny or happy or even rude. Unsmiling (неулыбчивость) is one of the most prominent national features of Russian communication.
1) They don’t smile at people for the sake of being “polite” because they consider this gesture weird and a waste of time. Such a “smile for being polite” can cause irritation and even alertness. Smiling doesn’t mean politeness.
2) Smiling at strangers is not accepted in Russia. But they will smile to their friends.
3) Russian will not always smile back at a person who smiles at him.
4) Russians usually don’t smile while performing their duties (customs officers, waiters, teachers, doctors etc.). They just being serious and concentrated!
5) Russians smile if they really feel like they want to smile or they have a strong reason for that.
6) Russian smile is believed to be sincere.
7) Russian smile at a person means good personal attitude to him.

We continue our posts about great Russian writes and their wives

The last and beloved wife of Dostoevsky was invited to his house as a stenographer. The writer had an idea to type his novel “Igrok” (Player) and for this purpose he was looking for an assistant. Stenography was a new thing and was not widespread at that time. But Anna Grygor'evna was the best one.
She counted herself fortunate to get the job and especially to get to know Dostoevsky. But at the first meeting she was a little disappointed with him. Later she told her mother that he had arisen complex and strong feeling of compassion, blank amazement and irrepressible carving for him. In fact she fell in love with Dostoevsky at once and even didn’t notice that.
While they were working together Dostoevsky was talking so much to her. Every time it was heart-to-heart talk. He became attached to the young girl. Finally he found his soul mate. Both were aggrieved when their work on the novel had ben finished. Dostoevsky decided not to lose Anna and proposed to her.

And what do you know about Russian classics?

Everybody is aware of one of the greatest Russian writers - F.M.Dostoevsky. Hardly anyone knows his wife, the last one.Today we would like to introduce her and share some interesting facts about their life.
Anna Grygor'evna Snitkina was the last wife of Dostoevsky. He was 25 years older. In spite of this the time they were living together was Dostoevsky's golden hours. Anna was very smart and kind. She dedicated the whole life to him. Even after his death she kept faith with Dostoevsky and never got married again. At that time she was only 35 years old.
By the way, the last Dostoevsky's novel "Братья Карамазовы" (Bratya Karamazovy) was dedicated to her.
