Our students always get surprised when they find out that Petrozavodsk and Saint-Petersburg are РОВЕСНИКИ (of the same age). They both were founded by Peter the Great in 1703.

Petrozavodsk started from a cannon and cast iron plant - ШУЙСКИЙ (ПЕТРОВСКИЙ) ЗАВОД. Now you can understand why the town has such a name. And when you come to Petrozavodsk you'll see some monuments that can tell you about its history: a statue of Peter the Great near the port and two cannons on the lake shore.
