Hello Dear Russian Learners!
Last week we talked about exceptions in plural forms of nounsToday let's talk about genders!
We all know that Russians refer to a table as "he" and to a lamp as "she". Every thing, every object has its own gender: masculine, faminine or neuter. Usually we determine a gender by an ending of a word: a hard consonant at the end shows that this word is masculine (стол, стул, компьютер, телефон); -а, -я tell us that this is a feminine word (книга, семья); -о, -е at the end mean that the word is neuter (окно, море). But there are some exceptions... As always!
One of the most well-known and often used words is КОФЕ (coffee). It ends in -e, so we might think that it's neuter (оно). BUT! It's an exception! It's masculine, not neuter. So never say "моё кофе" or "одно кофе". Instead use "МОЙ КОФЕ", "ОДИН КОФЕ".
Can you remember any other nouns gender exceptions?
