All our students just LOOOOVE Russian food, but only Lara, a student of Phillips Academy (Andover, USA) that took our course in June, came up with an amazing idea for her project – divide her favorite dishes into seasons: the best food for summer, autumn, winter and spring in Petrozavodsk.
She thinks that a salad with tomatoes, cucumbers and olive oil is a summer salad, which is right, because we mostly have these fresh vegetables in summer and early autumn. Lara likes to eat her favorite dish – fish with potatoes, which she had with onions with her host family, – in summer too. The best summer drink, Lara says, is tea with berries and honey – that’s a Karelian traditional thing, because we have lots of berries here.
Autumn: грибной суп (mushroom soup), фаршированные блины со сметаной (stuffed pancakes with sour cream), “Бабушкин торт” (gradma’s cake) – YUMMY!!!!
Winter: щи (traditional Russian cabbage soup), горячий шоколад (hot chocolate), курица и картофельное пюре (mashed potatoes with chicken) – that’s what you need in cold Russian winters!
And finally – Spring: борщ, сырники (cheese cakes), лесные ягоды (and forest berries again).
Lara did a great job, creating a book of amazing Russian dishes, showing her experience of life in Russia and using only the Russian language to write it! Hope to see her again in our school!
